Site

The Authority owns and operates the Southern Regions Landfill site located at Wheaton Rd McLaren Vale.  This site is one of the major waste disposal sites in Metropolitan Adelaide, receiving in excess of 200,000 tonnes of waste annually.

The operation employs a Landfill Manager and eight (8) on site personnel operating a variety of earthmoving and landfill compaction equipment.

The Landfill Operation, which for many years operated as a traditional landfill site, is now a modern waste disposal site that reflects the best landfill waste management technologies and construction methods available, complying with or exceeding legislative and design requirements.

From 2000 to 2006 the site was operated by Cleanaway under strict contractual arrangements, however following a restructure of the affairs of Cleanaway the Board resumed operational control of the site in May 2006.

This important strategic decision provides the opportunity for the Authority to better meet its aims and objectives, not only in the operation of the landfill site, but also in consideration of means to reduce waste to landfill and the further advancement of resource recovery and recycling initiatives.

Energy Developments Limited (EDL) has continued to manage the site’s landfill gas.
Landfill gas (methane) is extracted from the landfill site, processed to remove moisture and particulate matter and then used as a fuel for power generation. The resultant power is fed into the utility distribution system that supplies around 3,500 homes and businesses in the McLaren Vale area.
